Guide to Wallpapering your Home

Wallpapering your home can be a fun and rewarding DIY project that can completely transform the look and feel of a room. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to add texture, pattern, and color to your walls, and can be done by most people with a little bit of patience and the right tools. Here’s a step-by-step guide for how to wallpaper your home:

  1. Prep your walls: Before you start, make sure that your walls are clean, smooth, and dry. Fill in any holes or cracks with spackling paste and sand down any rough spots. Wipe the walls down with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris.
  2. Measure your walls: Measure the width and height of each wall that you will be wallpapering. Add an extra few inches to your measurements to account for any mistakes or misalignments.
  3. Calculate the amount of wallpaper you need: Multiply the width of each wall by the height to get the total square footage of each wall. Add these numbers together to get the total square footage of all the walls you will be wallpapering. Consult the packaging of your wallpaper to determine how much you will need based on the repeat pattern and width of the roll.
  4. Cut the wallpaper: Unroll the wallpaper and lay it face down on a clean, flat surface. Measure and mark the lengths you need, using a straight edge and a pencil to draw a straight line. Use a sharp utility knife or scissors to cut along the line.
  5. Apply the wallpaper paste: Follow the instructions on the wallpaper paste to mix it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Use a paint roller or brush to apply a thin, even layer of paste to the back of the wallpaper. Let the paste become “tacky” before hanging the paper, as directed on the paste container.
  6. Hang the wallpaper: Start at the top of the wall and align the edge of the wallpaper with the ceiling. Smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles as you go, using a smoothing tool or your hands. Trim off any excess wallpaper at the bottom and top using a straight edge and a sharp utility knife.
  7. Repeat the process: Continue hanging the wallpaper, matching up the patterns as you go, until all the walls are covered. Use a seam roller to press down the seams and smooth out any imperfections.
  8. Finish the edges: Use a putty knife to apply a thin layer of spackling paste along the edges where the wallpaper meets the ceiling, floor, and corners. Once the paste is dry, sand it down and paint over it with a color that matches the wallpaper.

Wallpapering your home can be a fun and satisfying DIY project that can completely transform the look and feel of a room. With a little bit of patience and the right tools, anyone can do it. Just follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to a beautifully wallpapered home in no time!
